Common Name: Southeastern Five-lined Skink
Scientific Name: Eumeces Inexpectatus
General Description: This lizard has five narrow light strips including dorsolateral stripe along 5th or 4th and 5th, scale rows counting from middle of back. Stripes fade with age. Tail may be blue or gray, here it is blue. Breeding male usually has red-orange head, here it is a breeding male. It is primarily a terrestrial species, its climbing ability is well developed. Sometimes cats eats the skink, in this case they may lose their sense of balance or develop a paralysis.
Breeding: Mates May to June. Clutch of up to 11 eggs laid in June, hatches in August.
Habitat: They are found in Moist woods and grassy areas, but also found in drier areas with sparse vegetation and no permanent fresh water.
Range: S. Maryland and Virginia, south through Florida and the Keys, west to Louisiana, and northeast to Kentucky.
